Literacy or Literacies? Most definitely Literacies! I enjoyed this reading, it opened up my mind as to what's really considered literacy. Actually it expanded the way I view literacy. I text, blog, email, read, write, play video games most on a daily basis, however I only view it as literacy when I'm reading and writing. Thanks Professor Boggs!!!

I definitely think it's cool that we have literacy throughout our daily life and we never really realize that we are doing it! It shows us that literacy is something we can truly enjoy whether it be blogging, texting, emailing, etc.

I think my favorite line out of this chapter was when they said "Literacy does not simply involve knowing how to encode and decode a particular kind of script....it involves applying this knowledge for specific purposes in specific contexts of use" I like the way this is said, if you don't comprehend and know how to use the knowledge you read, you are not using the skill of literacy. I really like Dewey's ideas about how teachers need to be preparing students for the outside world and a potential career. If you teach students how to read but not how to apply the literature to their life, you aren't fully teaching them.

I was asked the question "what should literacy look like in my classroom" after reading this article I realize that it won't just be what's written on the board or displayed in a poster but it will be the students comprehension and application of what they've learned.

Definitely literacies! As an English Ed person it is easy for us to just think of literacy as reading and writing but in order to teach our students to be well rounded we need to incorporate much more into our lessons. Students need the literacy practices they use on a day to day such as texting, but they also need to be pushed to write blogs, poems, short stories, etc. Students may be able to read but I agree with Taylor in the idea that we need to teach the students what to do with what they read. Literacy can help them beyond how to read and write but also how to make decisions.
