Hey guys! The Chapter 14 PDF was really interesting. I figured we could use it as a platform to get to know each other a bit better. My question for you all is how did you acquire or learn the Discourse of being a teacher? Did you mostly acquire this Discourse or learn it or a mix? (I know we aren't teachers yet, but this gives us the perfect opportunity to reflect on our process thus far of attaining this status)
I think that I acquired it from being a twin sister. My sister and I had every class together growing up, and we were talented in different subjects. Therefore, she would teach me things I didn't understand in one subject, and I would teach her things about a different subject or process. I acquired the language, attitude, and mindset of a teacher through this.
So, how are you guys becoming a teacher? Through class, different experiences, family members, friends?

I acquired the discourse of teaching through my brother. He's 11 months older than me but I tended to grasp things a bit quicker so I'd always explain them to him in a way he could better understand. I didn't realize it until a lot later but the constant practice of patience, collaboration, and communication my brother required of me, shaped my passion for teaching and working with others.

I think I would say I acquired this discourse from being the oldest child of 6 kids. I was always wanting to play school with my younger brothers and teach them what I was learning since I was older than them. I realized early on that I was good at school and I always liked my teachers as a young child so I wanted to be like them. Throughout college I made multiple different major changes (moved from elementary education, to English to Political Science, to finishing out in Advertising). I fought the idea of being a teacher throughout college but once I graduated I realized how much I still wanted to be a part of this discourse, hence why I am now in grad school for it. I definitely enjoy all of these classes much better than anything else I have ever taken, which has shown me that I finally ended up in the place I should be.

I cannot think of a specific moment in my life when I acquired this discourse of teaching. I felt it accumulate over time as I felt the enjoyment that came over me as I would teach ac classmate of mine something. To see them get to that "a-ha" moment was spectacular to experience.

I acquired this discourse over a period of time. When I became a parent I felt that I had also become responsible for my daughters success. I knew that what I taught her and what I exposed her to would make an impact on her life, however it wasn't until much later when I realized that I had a passion for teaching. Growing up in a large family although I am next to the youngest, family members always seem to come to me for help, advice and encouragement so when I took a spiritual gifts test at my church home and The results stated that I have the gift of teaching I wasn't shocked. Looking back over my life I actually began teaching before I entered the profession.

I definitely acquired this discourse by being the oldest of my three siblings. My dad is in the army and was deployed a lot, so whenever he was gone, it was like my mom and I were co-parenting. Not really, but that's how I felt. I'm seven years older than my sister and eleven years older than my brother, so we aren't on the same levels at all. I taught them a lot of what they know. When I was littler I also just picked up on things very quickly, whether it was in class, with friends, or around family members my age. So I was always sort of a know-it-all, and I was eager to teach others. I was pretty bossy too. When it comes to my content area, I fell in love with English when I was about six. I wrote my first short story and, from there, I couldn't stop writing, so I didn't. With writing, came my love for reading and grammar, so English class was my favorite...And BAM. A Star was born!

I honestly didn't think about how being an older sister helped in my acquisition of my discourse but I definitely am the one my mother turns to when my brother doesn't understand something on his homework. Even now, being over 400 miles away from home, my mom still calls me when my little brother doesn't understand something on his homework. It's usually reading related though.

I had never thought about how my brother influenced my acquisition of my discourse but he definitely did! We were good in very different things; he was good in athletics and I was good in school, and from that we learned from each other. Then, I learned from him specifically just from him. He is older than me so he taught me things life skills and things he had learned through experience that he does not want me to ever have to experience also. I would call him when something was happening with our parents, like I got in trouble and I needed advice about going about telling them, and he would reflect on his past experiences and give me advice because everything I was currently doing, he had already done!

I acquired this discourse by playing games with my friends. When we were primary school students, we often played role play games after school. In the game, one is the teacher and others are students. "The teacher" would give a class to others just like what we typically get from our teachers in school. I always like to play the role of the teacher. And I really enjoy the "mimic teaching". even at that moment i realized that classroom is not an easy task. And when I was in my middle school, we had a kind of peer- tutor in English class. I was always glad and patient to assist our group to perform better in situational dialogue. So, I knew that I want to and can be a teacher.

I think I acquired the discourse of being a teacher by helping my brother with English. He is the smartest kid when it comes to Math and Science, but struggles with English. Constantly helping him with grammar, writing essays, punctuation, etc. helped me discover my love for teaching and helping others. I never realized how much my brother influenced me until reading this post.

Along with a lot of you who I also acquired my discourse for teaching my younger brother as well as playing with friends. As the older sibling I was the one who my brother went to for help when doing homework, or wanting someone to read him a book. I also have many memories of playing school with friends and we would rotate on who got to be the teacher. I have never thought about what experiences built up and led me to become a teacher, but now I can see it started as a child.
