As I read this weeks reading I found myself thinking of memes. Many times I have come across memes that I haven't understood the humor in them. I just see a picture and don't understand why it's funny and/or viral. This only happens though when I don't know the background story of the meme or understand what it is making fun of. Like last week, I have found an understanding of literacy that I would never have considered before. For example, this meme of Donald Trump is only hysterical because I know who Sarah Palin is but had I not it wouldn't make any sense to me. Does anyone know of a meme that is only funny because they know the back story to or know of a meme they don't understand? Please share the memes! I would love to hear/see what everyone has to share.

My boyfriend thinks that this meme is hilarious. I've never seen Lord of the Rings, or know who Mordor is, so I have no idea why this meme is funny (is it?) or why it's so popular! Great discussion starter, HR!

Those who don't pay attention to facebook/instagram trending would probably have trouble understanding this one.

I really like this discussion topic! This goes back to what I was trying to say for on the digital literacies post, Reading something but not having the background knowledge to understand what it means, is not a literacy event. You have to be able to make sense of the information. For example with this meme, you would have to have seen the movie Fight Club.

I agree with a lot of what everyone is saying! For example, there's this one meme that many people find funny and I simply can't grasp what part of it is funny. Sometimes memes don't seem to have any context but it could just be that I lack the "literacy" for it. However, sometimes I find memes to be exceptionally hilarious and people don't understand why I'm laughing so much.

I really liked this topic because it's so true! I had not thought about it in terms of literacy but it makes me think of working with an English Language Learner and speaking to them using idiomatic language!

I really had to share this meme with you all. If you get it, YAY! If didn't watch this show, I'd be clueless as to why this is funny.

so I'm not sure if this technically classifies as a "meme" because it hasn't officially been used in the same way other, more popular memes are used. Nonetheless, I think it captures the general idea. Background: If you're not a fan of American football, you probably have no idea about this meme. This is Eli Manning, brother of Peyton Manning. Both of them are very good NFL quarterbacks. This image still was captured the moment Peyton (Eli's brother) clinched the Super Bowl victory. Winning the Super Bowl is the pinnacle of success for any NFL player. Now, you can't really tell from the photo but Eli is actually surrounded by his family who are all jumping, cheering and screaming in happiness because Peyton had just won the Super Bowl......except Eli. Eli, upon seeing his big brother win his 2nd Super Bowl, simply stares onto the field, blank expression, appearing to be totally unphased by this very triumphant moment. This image got a lot of circulation; people saying Eli is jealous of his brother, etc. I just think it's hilarious and if you have any knowledge of the Manning family (essentially football royalty) or Eli's style of play and general demeanor, it's even more hilarious. This second image is a "meme" someone created with a caption that makes the expression on Eli's face even more relatable and hilarious.
