After completing the ELL course I had the thought of how literacy practices could alter when working with an ELL student. How do you guys feel literacy practices change when working with ELL's? Are they the same?
I feel like they are similar based on the goals of where a teacher will want their student to be, but the activities or methods used may be different. Do you guys have any fun or interesting activities to help ELL's with their literacy practices?

I agree that they are similar and my field experience with TSL4081 made me realize that! My student is so smart but I've had to alter the methods that I would use with a native English speaker. One thing I have found super successful is using images to create a story, kind of like a graphic novel! I want to teach high school so maybe in a high school setting the students, even those who are native speakers, could use a graphic novel to tell a story.

I love your idea of creating image to tell a story! I can see myself using that in my future middle school classroom!

I don't necessarily think we would have to alter literacy practices for ELL students because regardless of the language, the practices are the same. We'd probably have to provide more help in the practices due to the language barrier but other than that, I don't think anything would change. I think modeling and use of pictures are great ways to support ELL's and all students in literacy practices.

For ELL tutoring this semester I had a 33 year old stage 4 second language level student and noticed many similar literacy practices as I have with my other students (high school). For example, I often find myself reinforcing contextual definitions to both my ELL student and the students I tutor at Ghazvini.

With my ELL tutoring this semester I made sure to include all of the skills need to acquire language (reading, writing, listening and speaking) within a session. Images, pictures, short text readings and videos were also helpful. An important part of teaching is determining how a student learns best and apply that method to inspire learning.
